Product Intelligence Analysts
If you work in e-commerce, you've encountered UPC, EAN, and GTIN codes. While they're all product identifiers, they serve different purposes and have different formats. Let's clear up the confusion once and for all.
UPC (Universal Product Code)
The UPC is a 12-digit barcode standard used primarily in the United States and Canada. It was introduced in 1974 and is the most widely recognized barcode format in North America.
- Format: 12 digits
- Region: US & Canada (primarily)
- Example: 012345678905
- Used by: Retailers, manufacturers, and distributors in North America
EAN (European Article Number)
The EAN is a 13-digit barcode standard used internationally. It's the global counterpart to the UPC and is managed by GS1, the same organization behind UPC.
- Format: 13 digits
- Region: Global (dominant outside North America)
- Example: 0012345678905
- Used by: Retailers and manufacturers worldwide
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)
GTIN is an umbrella term that encompasses both UPC and EAN, plus other formats. It's the standardized way to refer to any product identifier in the GS1 system.
- GTIN-8: 8 digits (for small packages)
- GTIN-12: 12 digits (same as UPC)
- GTIN-13: 13 digits (same as EAN)
- GTIN-14: 14 digits (for case/carton-level identification)
The Relationship Between Them
Here's the key insight: a UPC is just an EAN with a leading zero. The UPC "012345678905" is identical to the EAN "0012345678905". They refer to the same product.
GTIN-12 = UPC GTIN-13 = EAN
Which Should You Use?
- Selling in North America only? UPC is sufficient.
- Selling internationally? Use EAN/GTIN-13.
- Building a database? Store GTIN-13 (EAN) as your canonical identifier — you can always derive the UPC by removing the leading zero.
- Using APIs? EcomSource returns all three formats for every product, so you never have to worry about conversion.
Why This Matters for Amazon Sellers
