What is an ISBN?
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It identifies a specific edition of a book: the hardcover, the paperback, and the revised edition each get their own number. Since January 2007 new ISBNs have 13 digits and start with 978 or 979 (International ISBN Agency). Older books carry 10-digit ISBNs. The barcode on a book’s back cover encodes the ISBN-13, which is why it is sometimes called a bookland EAN.

The reprint trap: a 978 code and its old ISBN-10 are the same book, but a revised edition is not. Check the edition line in the record before listing against it.
The stripped-barcode trap: mass-market paperbacks sometimes carry a UPC on the front and the ISBN inside the cover. The inside code is the one that matters, and the barcode lookup resolves either.
